Question 52576: Hi,
I just read about graphing slopes, formulas and all that stuff and am pretty confused...
When I try to solve the below problem, I'm getting the right answer, except I'm getting a negative answer instead of positive...
The problem:
"Find the slope and y-intercept of the line whose equation is given and then graph the line.
3x + 5y + 10 = 0"
My effort:
3x + 5y + 10 = 0 or
3x + 5y = -10 or
5y = -3x + -10 or
y = -3/5x + -2
M = -3/5
Y-intercept = (0,-2)
I checked in the back of the book, and the correct answer is:
M = 3/5
y-intercept = (0,2)
But even after going over the problem, I can't figure out why I get a negative, and they get a positive...
Any help would be very much appreciated! (I don't need help with the graphing part though, I think I've got that :o)
Thanks,
~ Jasmine

The answer is simple. You are right; the book is wrong. Don't judge a book by its cover. Just because it's a math book, doesn't mean everything is right in it. Everyone makes mistakes. =P
