I guess an average day would be 50/50 which is a slope of 1. It's kind of hard to see a slope of 50/1 and 1/50 since they are SO very steep or flat, so let me illustrate with a less steep or flat slope. Suppose we call it a 5/1 and 1/5 slope. In the middle will be a 5/5 slope.

slope is the ratio of height you gain to a horizontal distance you travel
on a level road slope is zero..since the road is level and you dont gain any height.
on an inclined road to a hill top you gain height while going up.but if it is too steep you will be under severe strain and you may even fall back..( say while climbing a wall )..so roads along hills to climb up are inclined suitably to travel with less danger ,but at the same time not making too long a travel.these are called permissible gradients or slopes for safe travel along a road.
so slope can be zero for a horizontal road to infinte or very very large for a vertical climb.
the actual slopes are between these 2 limits.the same conditions for slope on descent will apply.here we call it as loss in height by horizontal travel.
now coming to your fathere's saying..it is usage in a different style meaning the same analogy..
he would like to gain 50 feet by travelling 1 foot..is the meaning of 50/1 slope...that is he expects 50 times the return on his effort.
obviously,on his off colour days , he has to toil 50 times to get a meagre return of 1..which represents the slope of 1/50...he has to trek 50' to gain 1'.
regarding medium slope it is your best guess as to what you recommend keeping his ambitions, dangers, achievements, permissible exertions, likely pitfalls etc as you know and love your father best.however,i would love to know your answer!!!!
hope you understand
