: I need to write an equation in slope-intercept form that satisfies each condition; then graph.
I am given only that the x-intercept = -4 and the y-intercept = 4.
I looked up the definitions of x-intercept and y-intercept. And reading in my textbook I see the formula of y = mx+ b. In that formula I understand that m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. But what is the x-intercept in this formula??

You are given the x-intercept (x = -4) but that is really the point (-4, 0).
Similarly, the y-intercept (y = 4) is really the point (0, 4).
Now with these two points, you can find the slope, m, using where:
(-4, 0) = (x1, y1) and (0, 4) = (x2, y2)

Now you can write, in slope-intercept form :
Now substitute the given y-intercept (4) for b.

Now for the graph:

As you can see from the graph, the line intercepts the x-axis (x-intercept) at the point (-4, 0) and it intercepts the y-axis (y-intercept) at the point (0, 4).
The slope (rise over run) can be seen, from the graph, to be 1.
