The equation represents a vertical line consisting of all ordered pairs where the coordinate is equal to 1. A line perpendicular to a vertical line is a horizontal line. Horizontal lines have the characteristic that the coordinates of every ordered pair contained in the set of ordered pairs that is the vertical line are identical. Since the desired perpendicular must pass through the point , that coordinate must be 3.
