Question 496584: Hi! My daughter is working on linear patterns and has this problem amongst them. I understand the concept and the pattern but do not remember from my college days how to write the equation. Here's the problem as on her worksheet:
"Write an equation that describes each linear pattern."
X: 1 2 3 4 5 8
Y: 2 7 12 17 22 37
I have the equation figured out that Y= 4X-2 with the last number being a variable of 1 for each step. How does she write that in an equation showing the changing number?
My daughter did not bring her text home and the other sites that I've researched have the standard linear equations but I have been unsuccessful in finding this particular situation. Thank you soo much for your help!
Sincerely, Monica
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
"Write an equation that describes each linear pattern."
X: 1 2 3 4 5 8
Y: 2 7 12 17 22 37
---
Notice that y increases by 5 when x increases by 1.
That means the slope is 5
----
Form: y = mx + b
solve for "b":
2 = 5*1 + b
b = -3
----
Equation:
y = 5x-3
