Question 4870: Please help with solving the systems of equations by substitution and elimination. Once I started working with solving this problem in the substituation method, I ran into fractions. Is there a way to eliminate fractions early on?
4x + 7y =18
5x - 3y = 2
I solved for x by getting x = -7y/4 + 18/4
Thanks!!
Answer by longjonsilver(2297) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you could make the first equation 20x+35y=90 and the second one 20x-12y=8, then find 20x= from the first and substitute that into the second. But you are doing more work here and defeating the object really of doing a substitution method: might as well just do the elimination method when both have 20x.
So, short answer is no - learn to work with fraction :-). Love fractions. Fractions are your friend lol
Enjoy.
