Question 468217: How do I use addition to solve: {2x+3y=-5
{3x-2y=12

Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x + 3y = -5 ----> 4x + 6y = -10 {multiplied top equation by 2}
3x - 2y = 12 ----> 9x - 6y = 36 {multiplied bottom equation by 3}

4x + 6y = -10
9x - 6y = 36
-------------
13x = 26 {added the two new equations together}
x = 2 {divided both sides by 13}

2x + 3y = -5 {top equation}
2(2) + 3y = -5 {substituted 2, in for x, into top equation}
4 + 3y = -5 {multiplied 2 by 2}
3y = -9 {subtracted 4 from both sides}
y = -3 {divided both sides by 3}

x = 2 and y = -3
