Equation
10000 + 8.50x = 85000
subtract 10000 from both sides
8.50x = 750000
divide by 8.50 on both sides
x = 8823.53
That means that the company could produce 8823 units.

Let # of units the company can manufacture be "x".
Expenses=10,000+8.50x
Expenses must be <= $85000
INEQUALITY:
10000+8.50x<=85000
8.5x<=75000
x<=8823.529
Since the number of units is a whole number,
x=8823 (# of units the company can manufacture)

I would use the formula for a linear equation because as the number of units increase, the cost will increase. Use the formula:
y=mx+b
y=85,000 (total monthly cost)
m=8.50(rate of change)
x=cost per unit
b= 10,000 (fixed, flat cost)
.
y = m x + b
85,000=8.50x+10,000
85,000-10,000=8.50x
75000/8.50=x
x=8823.53 or 8823 units
Checking the answer:
x=8823.53
85,000=8.50(8823.53)+10,000
