Find the slope of the given line. You can either put the equation into slope-intercept form and then determine the slope by inspection, or you can just divide the coefficient on x by the opposite of the coefficient on y.

Parallel lines have equal slopes, that is:



So once you have determined the slope of the given line, you have the slope of the desired line as well.

Use the point-slope form of an equation of a line to write the desired equation:
