Question 371166: Solve using the elimination method. Show your work. If the system has no solution or an infinite number of solutions, state this.
7x + 8y = 51
7x + 10y = 55

Answer by neatmath(302)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

If you subtract the first equation from the second equation, you will "eliminate" the x variable!

What you need to do is just subtract like terms, ie subtract 7x from 7x, subtract 8y from 10y, and subtract 51 from 55.

You will end up with

Then just plug y=2 back into either one of the equations.

Therefore, the ONLY solution to this system of equations is:

x=5 and y=2, or the point (5,2)

I hope this helps!
