Question 353506: Hello. I am a college student dealing with linear equations. I have finsihed the rest of my assignment, but I am stuck on this one problem.
x-y = 3
-6x+6y=17
The instructions to this problem say to Solve each system by the addition method. Determine whether the equations are independent, dependent, or inconsistent.
The example says to multiply each side by the x value.
This is what I have come up with:
x-y = 3 (1)
-6x + 6y = 17 (2)
I multiplied (1) by 6 and (2) by 1
I came up with
6x-6y= 18

-6x+6y = 17
then I end up with both 0 x and 0 y
ox + 0y = 35
That did not give me a workable answer.
Then I tried multiplying (1) by -6 and (2) by 1
-6x+6y = -18
-6x+6y = 17
-12x + 12y = -1
or
-6x-6y = -18
-6x+6y = 17
-12x+oy = -1
-12x = -1
x = -1/-12
x = 1/12 or .083...
That just does not seem right to me. Can you please help me figure out what I am doing wrong!
