The correct answer to the equation above, is -3/14, and it is 

correct because it is checked below:

                     -2x + 4(-2x - 2) = -1 + 4(x - 1)

                         -2x - 8x - 8 = -1 + 4x - 4

                             -10x - 8 = -5 + 4x

                            -10x - 4x = -5 + 8

                                 -14x = 3

                                    x = -3/14 



Check:               -2x + 4(-2x - 2) = -1 + 4(x - 1)

         -2(-3/14) + 4[-2(-3/14) - 2) = -1 + 4(-3/13 - 1)

                    3/7  + 4[3/7 - 2] = -1 + 4(-3/14 - 14/14)

                 3/7  + 4(3/7 - 14/7) = -1 + 4(-3/14 - 14/14)

                       3/7 + 4(-11/7) = -1 + 4(-17/14)

                           3/7 - 44/7 = -1 - 34/7

                                -41/7 = -7/7 - 34/7

                                -41/7 = -41/7
