If a system is consistent and independent, then only one solution exists. Visually, this is represented by the intersection of two lines (ie they cross at one point)
If a system is consistent and dependent, then an infinite number of solution exists. Graphically, the two lines are now one in the same (they "intersect" at an infinite number of places)
If a system is inconsistent, then there are no solutions. In this case, the two lines are parallel and never intersect at all.
So it really depends on which type of system it is.
