I seem to be having a problem with solving linear equations. I can usually get the first part, and then I lose it. Could you please explain the steps, as the textbook doesn't seem to explain it to my understanding. Thanks so much.

fractions give me the willies , so multiply by -4 (LCD)

x-8 - 2(x+2) = -4x - 36 ___ x - 8 - 2x - 4 = -4x - 36

adding 4x and 12 (to get x's on one side and numbers on the other) ___ 3x = -24

dividing by 3 ___ x = -8

-1/4x+2+1/2x+1=x+9
1/4x=6
x=6/(1/4)
x=6*(4/1)
x=24
