Question 324325: How do I use the elimination method to solve two linear equations?
2x+3y=1
4x+6y=2
Please explain to me

Answer by Fombitz(32388)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Look for combinations of the equations that allow you to eliminate a variable.
If you multiply eq. 1 by (-2) and add it to eq. 2 you will eliminate x.
Unfortunately in this case you will also eliminate y.
The two equations are depedent, that is, they are the same equation.
If you multiply equation 1 by 2, you will get equation 2.
In this case, every solution of eq. 1 will be a solution of eq. 2 so there are an infinite number of solutions.

Which is the typical result you achieve when you have dependent equations.
.
.
.
If you get a result similar to

then you have two parallel lines, an inconsistent system, and will have no solution.
