Here is a recent problem solved using the elimination method
We multiply one or both equations by a value that will make the coefficient of
one of the variables the same, if the signs are different we can add
If the signs are the same we subtract.
:
+8x + 7y = 12
-7x - 4y = -2
:
Multiply the 1st equation by 4, multiply the 2nd equation by 7, results
+32x + 28y = 48
-49x - 28y = -14
---------------------addition eliminates y, find x
-17x + 0y = 34
x =
x = -2
:
Use the 1st original equation to find y
8(-2) + 7y = 12
-16 + 7y = 12
7y = 12 + 16
7y = 28
y =
y = 4
:
:
Check solution in the 2nd original equation:
-7(-2) - 4(4) = -2
14 - 16 = -2
