Ben had $143 and Michael had $19


Adding x dollars,they now have


Ben=(143+x)
Michael=(19+x)


but now ben has 5 times as much as michael


(143+x)=5(x+19)
143+x=5x+95
143-95=5x-x
48=4x
x=12


Thus they were each given 12 dollars.
