In the algebraic linear equation, x = 4, why is the "x" a vertical line?

With x=4, it doesn�t matter what the value of y is but the value of x must remain at 4. This means that because the x-axis is horizontal you cannot move horizontally i.e. away from 4 because you are fixed at x=4; but since the y-axis is vertical and the value of y can take any value, you can move vertically.
