Let the plane speed be P, the speed in still air.
Let the wind speed be W.
Travels with the wind, the plane's true speed is,

Travels against the wind, the plane's true speed is,

Since rate*time=distance.


Usually you either know T1 and T2 and solve for D or some other combination of variables.
