Question 28948: if the slope is 2/3 and the point is(6,1)what is the y=mx+b
Answer by sdmmadam@yahoo.com(530)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If the slope is 2/3 and the point is(6,1)what is the y=mx+b
The slope and y-intercept form of equation to a line is
y =mx +b ----(1)
where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept
Given m= 2/3.
To find b,we are given an information that P(6,1) is a point on the given line
Since P(6,1) is a point on (1),therefore x=6 and y=1 should hold in (1)
Therefore putting x=6,y=1 and m=2/3 in (1)
1= (2/3)X(6) +b
1= 4 +b
b= 1-4= -3 Therefore b = -3
Thus we have m=2/3 which is directly given
and b= -3 (which we found out using the data that (6,1)is a point on the line)
Therefore (1) becomes
y=(2/3)x -3 which is the required form
Multiplying by 3 through out
3y = 2x -9
That is 2x-3y-9 =0 which is the equation to the given line in the general form.
How much to write in the test?
The slope and y-intercept form of equation to a line is
y =mx +b ----(1)
where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept
Given m= 2/3.
To find b
Since P(6,1) is a point on (1),therefore putting x=6,y=1 and m=2/3 in (1)
1= (2/3)X(6) +b
1= 4 +b
b= 1-4= -3 Therefore b = -3
Therefore (1) becomes
y=(2/3)x -3 which is the required form
Thst is 3y = 2x -9
That is 2x-3y-9 =0 (general form)
