Kathy and Chris studied a total of 54 hours for the cpa exam. If chris studied only 1/2 as many hours as Kathy, then how many hours did each of them study?
I figured in my head that the answer was 18 and 36 but I am having a hard time comming up with the equation to get me to the answer. I would really appreciate any help

Let K = Kathy's hours
Let C = Chris's hours
C + K = 54
C = K/2
K/2 + K = 54
(3/2)K = 54
K = (2/3)54
K = 36
C = K/2 = 18
check
18 + 36 = 54
