-7(u – 3) = -3u + 17
---
-7u + 21 = -3u + 17
Add 7u to both sides:
Subtract 17 from both sides:
4u = 4
u = 1

ok we get, for starters, -7u+21=-3u+17,
-4u=-4
u=1
1 is the answer.
