Question 26622: Please explain the steps to solve the following problem:
y/4-y+5/3=0
i have changed the bottom numbers into a common denominator of 12 then tried to work through the equation with the following:
36y - 48y +5 = 0
12y + 5 = 0
12y +5 -5 = 0-5
12y= -5
12y/12= -5/12
y= -5/12
can you please explain where I have gone wrong.
Answer by longjonsilver(2297) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y/4 - y + 5/3 = 0
You do not need a denominator of 12... all you need do is get the terms with a y in them together. In this case, let their denominators be 4.
y/4 - 4y/4 + 5/3 = 0
-3y/4 + 5/3 = 0
-3y/4 = -5/3
3y/4 = 5/3
--> y = 20/9
