The reasoning steps are:
(1) If 2 lines are parallel, they have the same slope
(2) If you know 2 points, you know the equation of the
line through those 2 points
First, I'll find the equation of the line through
P[1](2,3) and P[2](1,-2)
The general equation is:

----------------------------
given:

This is in the general form
where is the slope, so the slope
of this equation is , and any line that
is parallel to it has slope =
----------------------------------------------
Now I have to find the line through Q(-3,2)
with
Since the general form for a line is ,
I can plug in values for x,y,and m, and then find

So the equation is
, and in standard form:

Parallel lines have equal slopes. Use the slope formula to calculate the slope of the line that contains the points (2,3) and (1,-2).

where and are the coordinates of the two given points.

Once you have calculated the slope of the line containing the points (2,3) and (1,-2), use that slope and the coordinates of point Q in the point slope form of the equation of a line to write the desired equation.

Where is the slope you just calculated and are the coordinates of point Q.

Through Q(-3,2) and parallel to the line containing (2,3) and (1,-2)
Y=mX+b
m=slope
b=Y intercept
m=(-2-3)/(1-2)
m=-5/-1
m=5
3=2*5+b
3=10+b
b=3-10
b=-7 the Y intercept.
Y=5X-7 (red line)
A parallel line will also have a slope=5
2=5*-3+b
2=-15+b
b=2+15
b=17 the Y intercept.
Y=5X+17 (green line)
