Give the standard form of the equation of the line that is perpendicular to y=8/7x-9 and contains (8, -1).

step 1 - solve the equation for y. We already have that as y=(8/7)x-9
step 2 - identify the slope. m = (8/7)
step 3 - we want perpendicular slope so take our slope and negative flip it to get m = (-7/8).
step 4 - put this new slope, m = -7/8 and (8, -1) into y = mx + b and solve for b. We get

step 5 - write the equation with your new m and b values as

The given equation of the line is
y = (8/7)x-9
Slope of this line = 8/7
The slope of a line perpendicular to this line = -7/8
Ifthe perpendicular line passes through the point (8,-1) then its equation is
[y-(-1)] = (-7/8)(x-8)
8(y+1) = -7(x-8)
8y+8 = -7x+56
7x+8y+8-56 = 0
7x+8y-48 = 0
