There are two parts to this compound problem: (i) -1 < X and (ii) X < 4
let's do (i) first.
step #1: put an open circle above -1. We need open circle because there is no line under the inequality.
step #2: Draw an arrow to the right. We go right because X is greater than. Always read from the letter first.
Now, for (ii)
step #1: put an open circle above -4. We need open circle because there is no line under the inequality.
step #2: Draw an arrow to the left. We go left because X is less than. Always read from the letter first.
You end up with a picture that have open circles above -1 and 4 and a segment connecting them.
