Question 243285: What is the easiest way to find the value of x and y and doing linear graphs? For example the question is x + y = -3. I can't believe that you are just suppose to pick a number out of mid air as my book is telling me - there has to be a more logical way that I'm not getting.

Try x=0 and y=0, provided neither of these appears as a denominator.
To be safer, set x=1 and compute the value of y.
Then set y = 1, and compute the value of x that makes that true.
Or pick a value of y that makes it easy to find the value of x.
All you need to draw a line is two points.
