In this problem we want x alone so to do that we multiply both sides by -3 as shown here:
(-3)-x/3 = (-3)1/8 or rewritten as:
x=-3/8
You can plug this into the original to see if it is correct. You might want to check out my book as it gives the very basics to getting better grades.
