First of all, you are trying to isolate x, so keep that in mind. In this problem, there are variables on both sides of the equal signs; because of this, you will need to variables so they're both on the same side. In this problem, you will need to subtract 7x from both sides of the equation.
9x-4=7x-8
9x-4-7x=7x-8-7x
Now, you are left with 2x-4=-8. Now, you will have to take out the additional information that you don't need. Such information may be addition and subtraction problems. In this problem, you will need to add 4 to both sides of the equation.
2x-4=-8
2x-4+4=-8+4
Now you have 2x=-4
You are now ready to divide each side by 2 to isolate x.
2x/2=-4/2

9x-4=7x+8 You are basically trying to find x by manipulating equation, but it also has to stay equation - to assure that you need to always manipulate with both sides.You can for instance add,subtract,multiply or divide equation by any number you please.
9x-4=7x+8
9x-4-7x=8 (I subtracted 7x)
9x-7x=8+4 (I added 4)
2x = 12 ( I just evaluated it)
x = 6 (divided by 2)
