Question 21231: WHAT DOES IT MEAN BY SUBTITUTION WITH THIS PROBLEM
3X-5Y=-12
X+ 2Y=7

3X-5Y=-12
X+ 2Y=7
It just means you will solve one equation for x or y, and substitute that answer in the other equation to solve. Lets start by find x, so we will take the secind equation and solve for x;
x+2y=7
subtract 2y from both sides;
x+2y-2y=7-2y
x=7-2y
Now we have what x = so we can substitute it in the other equation so we can solve for y;
3(7-2y)-5y=-12
distribute the 3;
21-6y-5y=-12
21-11y=-12
subtract 21 from both sides;
21-11y=-12-21
-11y=-33
Divide each side by -11;
=
y=3
Now we now what y =, so now solve the equation for x, lets use the second equation only becuase it is easier;
x+2y=7
x+2(3)=7
x+6=7
x=1
It doesn't matter which equation you start with, you should just use the easier one to solve.
Hope you understand
=)
