Question 209422: I am having a problem with solving the word equations. Im not sure of how to write them out.
This is one I have to solve:
Find three consecutive even integers such that eight times the sum of the first two integers is eight more than twelve times the third integer.
This is what I wrote out but I don't believe it is right:
8(x+x)=8 + 12(x+3)

Good start
.
Let consecutive EVEN integers be,,,x,,,,,x+2,,,,x+4
.
then equation becomes,,,,8{(x) +(x+2)} = 8+12(x+4)
.
simplify
.
8{2x+2} = 8 +12x + 48
.
16x +16 =8 +12x +48
.
4x = 40
.
x=10,,,integers are,,,10,,,12,,,14
.
.
check,,,8(10+12) = 8 + 12(14)
.
8(22) =8 + 12(14)
.
176 = 8+168 = 176,,,,ok
.
NOTE, the relation x,,x+2,,x+4,,etc,,,,works for consecutive EVEN or ODD integers
