Question 190105: Solve this system using the Addition Method:
3x - y = -1
4x + 2y = 22
Answer by cutepiscean5(19) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
we are given the system of equations as:
.............. (1)
.............. (2)
multiply equation (1) by 2, we get:
(now, use the distributive law to open the brackets)
=> .............. (3)
Now Add equations (3) with equation (2). (In the addition method, we need to make the coefficients of either variable of opposite signs so that on adding the two equations the terms cancel out.)

now plug in this value of x onto any of the equations (1) or (2) and get the value of y,
from equation (1) we get:
=>
=>
=>
=>
=>
so, we have our x and y values...
we can check them by plugging these values into the equations (1) and (2).
from (1) we get:
=>
=>
=> , which is true.
from (2) we get:
=>
=>
=> , which is again true.
so our values of x and y are correct !
Hope this helps.
