A bicyclist rode into the country for 5 hours. In returning by the same route, her speed was 4 mph slower and the trip took 6 hours. How far did she go during the entire trip?

Into the country DATA:
time = 5 hrs ; rate = x mph ; distance = rt = 5x miles
-------------------------
Return-trip DATA:
time = 6 hrs : rate = x-4 mph ; distance = rt = 6(x-4) miles
-------------------------
Equation:
distance = distance
5x = 6(x-4)
5x = 6x - 24
x = 24 mph (rate into thecountry)
-----------------------------
total distance = 5x+ 6(x-4) with x = 24
=5*24 + 6(24-4)
= 120 + 120
= 240 miles
