Question 178179: I replaced the numbers in this equation so I can solve my own numbers. Could someone please help me.
The medium age of first marriage is 24.5 years in 1995 to 25.1 years in 2000. Let 1995 be year 5 and 2000 be year 10.
a) Find the equation of the line through (5,24.5)and (10, 25.1).
b) What do x and y represent in your equation?
c) Interpret the slope of this line.
d) In what year will the medium age be 30?
I want to compare what I have in my problem so please show work. Thank you.

The medium age of first marriage is 24.5 years in 1995 to 25.1 years in 2000. Let 1995 be year 5 and 2000 be year 10.
a) Find the equation of the line through (5,24.5)and (10, 25.1).
slope = (24.5 - 24.1) / (5 - 10) = 0.4/(-5) = -0.08
--------------
intercept: 25.1 = (-0.08)*10 + b
25.1 = -0.8 + b
b = 25.9
---
Equation: y = -0.08x + 25.9
------------------------------------
b) What do x and y represent in your equation?
x is # of years after 1990
y is median age of first marriage
------------------------------------
c) Interpret the slope of this line.
As the number of years after 1990 increases by one the median
age of 1st marriage decreases by 0.08
------------------------------------
d) In what year will the medium age be 30?
30 = -0.08x + 25.9
-0.08x = 4.1
x = -51.25
----
Year = 1990 -51.25 = 1938.75 or year 1939
