The diameter of the Earth is 1.28 x 10 to the fourth power Kilometers. The diameter of Jupiter is 1.43 x 10 to the fifth power Kilometers. How much larger is the diameter of Jupiter? Explain how you found your answer
------------
dia of Jupiter = 1.43*10^5 = 14.3*10^4
dia of Earth = 1.28*10^4
Jupiter's dia - Earth's diameter = (14.3 - 1.28)*10^4 = 13.02*10^4
= 1.302*10^5 km difference in diameters.
--------------
14.3/1.28 = 11.172, so Jupiter's dia is 11.172 times that of Earth. Note: It is NOT 11.172 times larger, is it 11.172 times as large. That makes it 10.172 times larger.
When dividing, both terms were 10^4, so they canceled.
When adding or subtracting, the exponents must match.
