Question 154170: for writing and interpreting direct variation

problem: if y= -4 when x=(1/2), find y when x=(2/3)
y= kx k= y/x k= -4/(1/2) y= -8x y= -8(2/3) y= -(16/3)
how do you find y after you plugged x into the equation??

problem: if y= -4 when x=(1/2), find y when x=(2/3)
y= kx k= y/x k= -4/(1/2) y= -8x y= -8(2/3) y= -(16/3)
how do you find y after you plugged x into the equation??
---------------
Direct variation implies y = kx
------------
You are told y=-4 when x = 1/2
Solve for "k".
-4 = k/(1/2)
k = -2
----------------
so, the equation for your problem is y = -2x
---------------------
Now, find y when x = 2/3
y = -2(2/3)
y = -4/3
