Question 150130: If line L1 and L2 are perpendicular, and L1 has a slope of 3, what is the slope of L2?
I have to answer this question for a worksheet, and i dont understand the question, nor how to do the problem.
Shouldnt it tell me more numbers than just the slope of 1 line?
I dont understand this.
Can somebody please help me?
Thank you So much,
KKG.
Answer by nerdybill(7384) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If two lines are perpendicular, their slopes must be "negative reciprocal".
That is:
Let x = slope of L2
.
Then, for L1 and L2 to be perpendicular, it must be:
3x = -1
x = -1/3
.
Therefore, the slope of L2 is -1/3
