Solving equations is basically "undoing" what was done to the x. In this case, you need to "undo" additon of +3 by subtracting 3 from each side.
2x+3=8
2x+3-3 = 8-3
2x= 5

Next, to "undo" multiplication by 2, divide both sides by 2.
x=5/2 or 2.5
