Well, you have to add the values to get the distance.
To properly illustrate,

---- x ----- 0 ---- y ---------
-1/4 _______________________________3/5
Zero divides the #'s right?
So your distance will be x+ y as shown in the dotted lines.
To get x, -1/4 to 0 is right?
For y, 0 to 3/5 = or
Therefore, , or in fractions .
