What is the equation of a line parallel to y=-X+3 through the point (2,4)?
:
Parallel lines have the same slope
The given equation has a slope (m) of -1
:
Use the point/slope formula which is y - y1 = m(x -x1)
:
In your problem m =-1; x1 = 2, y1 = 4, so we have:
:
y - 4 = -1(x - 2)
:
y - 4 = -x + 2; multiplied what's inside the brackets by-1
:
y = -x + 2 + 4; added 4 to both sides
:
y = -x + 6; (green line, it intercepts the y axis at +6)
:
If you graph these you can see they are in fact parallel
