The difference of two numbers is 11. The second is 8 less than 2 times the first. What are the two numbers?

Answer by checkley71(8403)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x-y=11
y=2x-8 now replace y with (2x-8) in the first equation & solve for x.
x-(2x-8)=11
x-2x+8=11
-x=11-8
-x=3
x=-3 answer.
-3-y=11
-y=11+3
-y=14
y=-14 answer.
proof
-14=2*-3-8
-14=-6-8
-14=-14
