Question 1205377: You work in a warehouse in shipping and receiving. You just started.
The sign on the elevator in a ten story building states that the weight cannot exceed 1400 lbs. Your job is to move a shipment of boxes from the bottom floor to the 6th floor. Each box weights 48 lbs. Lets say you weigh 175 lbs.
Write an inequality that satisfies the situation in which you will move the most amount of boxes possible in each trip in the elevator. Be sure to define the variables used and your weight.

Answer by math_tutor2020(3817) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = number of boxes, some nonnegative whole number
48x = weight of all those boxes, ignoring your weight
48x + 175 = weight of those boxes plus your weight as well
"The weight cannot exceed 1400 lbs". This is the highest we can go. It's the ceiling value.
Either TotalWeight = 1400 or TotalWeight < 1400
It leads to
I'll let the student solve this inequality if your teacher requires it.
Note: The info about moving boxes from the bottom floor to the 6th floor is added info meant as a distraction.

Keep in mind that the elevator moves with ACCELERATION when it starts moving up.
So, if you designed the maximum load for static conditions, it can be failed at acceleration (!)
