I have been trying to solve this question:
Write the equation of the line which passes through (3, - 1) and is perpendicular to the line with equation 3y - x = 3
I know the correct answer is 3x + y = 8, but I just can't seem to get there. Any help would be great, thank you.

Write the equation of the line which passes through (3, - 1) and is perpendicular to the line with equation 3y - x = 3
3y - x = 3
3y=x+3
y = (1/3)x +1
slope m = (1/3)
the slope of any perpendicular line is the negative reciprocal of the other
slope of perpendicular is -3 passing through (3, - 1)
y=mx+b
plug point and slope
-1 = -3(3) +b
-1= -9 +b
b=8
the equation is y = -3x+8
