Question 1175065: I'm asking this question once again but I never really received an answer. Thank you.
Cesar is 20 years old. Marissa is 14 years old. How many years ago was Cesar's age 3 times Marissa's age?

Answer by ikleyn(52788)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.

Let x be "how many years ago . . . "

Then you have this equation

    20-x = 3*(14-x).

Simplify and solve

    20 - x = 42 - 3x

    3x - x = 42 - 20

      2x   = 22

       x   = 22/2 = 11.

ANSWER.  11 years ago.

CHECK. 11 years ago they were 20-11 = 9 years old (Cesar) and 14-11 = 3 years old (Marissa).

               9/3 = 3.   ! Correct !

Solved.
