Question 1133786: Hi. For homework I have to see if these two equations are perpendicular, parallel, or neither:
x=5 and 2x- 3 =25.
I don't understand because in the first one the y-intercept is given, but in the second there is no y.

For homework I have to see if these two equations are perpendicular, parallel, or neither:
x=5 and 2x- 3 =25.
I don't understand because in the first one the y-intercept is given, but in the second there is no y.
--------------
The 2nd one has no y ---> it's the same x for all values of y.
---> parallel to the y-axis (often called vertical).
================
The 1st one has no y either, so they are parallel, both "vertical."

(1)
(2)
------------------------
The 1st equation is a vertical line since no
matter what y is, x is always 5
(2)
(2)
(2)
This is also a vertical line for the same reason,
so these lines are parallel
--------------------------------
You said the 1st equation only has a y-intercept.
In that case the equation would be
and then the lines would be perpendicular

and

to see if these two equations are perpendicular, parallel, or neither , first find slope
by definition, parallel lines have same slopes
by definition, perpendicular lines have slopes negative reciprocal to each other

rewrite both equations in slope intercept form where is slope and is y-intercept
in your case:
=>Since we did not have a change in the values, the denominator of our slope became . This means that we have an slope.

=>=>=>=>slope is
so, in your case both lines have same slope =>lines are
