Question 110869: One day, the temperature at 11:00 A.M. was 44°F, and by 4:00 P.M. the temperature was 54°F. What was the hourly rate of temperature change?
Thank you!
Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There are five hours between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
.
During that time the temperature went from 44°F to 54°F, a change of +10°F.
.
The average hourly rate of change is the change in temperature divided by the change in time:
.
Rate = 10°F/5 hr = +2°F/hr
.
The rate of change is read as +2°F per hour with the + sign indicating that the temperature
was increasing each hour.
.
Note this is the "average" rate for the entire period of 5 hours. In "real life" the temperature
might not have changed during the first couple of hours and then it could have increased
at a faster rate during the last hour or two ... just enough to make the total change 10°F
by the end of the 5 hours.
.
Hope this helps you to understand the problem.
