2) 2x + y = 35

solve equation 2 for y
:
y = 35 - 2x

substitute for y in equation 1
:
x + 35 - 2x = 8

-x = -27
:
x = 27

using equation 1, substitute for x
:
2(27) + y = 35
:
y = 35 - 54 = -19
:
