Question 1095978: A gardener wishes to use a fungicide for his garden. He has 10 litres of 1 % solution of fungicide and what volume of 50% concentrate to the nearest ml would he need to add to his 10 litres to produce 2% solution of fungicide?
I am totally lost by this question.
I began with....
0.01 x (10 - X) + x Where 0.01 is 1% in decimal form, 10 is the number of litres and x is the volume of concentrate...

.
 = 0.02 (2% concentration; the final liquid volume is (10+x) liters)

Solution:

0.01*10 + 0.5*x = 0.02*(10+x),  ====>  (multiply by 100 both sides for the sake of simplicity)  ====>

10 + 50x = 2*(10+x),

10 + 50x = 20 + 2x,

48x = 20 - 10 = 10  ====>  x =  = 0.2083 liters = 208.3 mL.

Answer.  208.3 mL.

Solved.

No, no!!
With x being the amount of 50% concentrate to add, your equation should be: .01(10) + .5x = .02(10 + x)
Solve this to get the amount in liters. Then convert the liter amount to mL by multiplying it by 1,000.
