Question 1091870: One number is 20 more than another. If the greater number is increased by 4, the result is five times the smaller. Find the two numbers.
I need some help understanding how to get the formula to solve this.
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Just read the problem:
One number: x
Other number: y
The problem says:
x = y+20
the greater number (it's x, because the problem says it's 20 bigger than y) increased by 4 = 5y, so:
x+4 = 5y
substitute for x, since we just said that the problem says that x = y+20
y+20+4 = 5y
y+24 = 5y
24 = 4y flip the equation so we have the variable on the left:
4y = 24
y = 24/4 = 6
and
x = y+20 = 6+20 = 26
