Question 1080653: at 10 a.m., emma begins walking on a path at a rate of 3 miles per hour. one hour later her friend sara starts at the same point and begins walking on the path at 4 miles per hour. how long will it take sara to catch up to emma on the path?
Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance that Emma has walked is rate* time=3mph * x hours or 3x miles.
For Sara, it is 4 mph * (x-1) hours, since she started an hour behind, or 4x-4 miles.
Those two are equal since she caught up.
3x=4x-4
-x=-4
x=4 hours
Emma walked 12 miles in 4 hours
Sara walked 12 miles in 3 hours. It took Sara 3 hours to catch up.
She was gaining at 1 mph and started 3 miles behind--3 hours to catch up.
